New fire reported at reactor 4 of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan

SYDNEY (MarketWatch)
Hopes that Japan’s nuclear crisis may be stabilizing were dealt a blow on Wednesday after another fire reportedly broke out at the No. 4 reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in northeast Japan.
The latest fire comes hard on the heels of three explosions and one fire at the nuclear complex which suffered damage after Friday’s massive earthquake and tsunami.
Japan radiation exposure threatAs the nuclear crisis in Japan deepens, Dr. David Brenner, director of Columbia University's Center for Radiological Research discusses who's at risk, the potential consequences and detecting radiation exposure.
Tuesday’s fire at the No. 4 reactor was reportedly responsible for a dramatic spike in radiation to potentially harmful levels around the plant.
However radiation levels fell in the afternoon, raising hope that the plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co.  (TKECF 16.50, -2.50, -13.16%) had the situation under control.
Tepco has been struggling to keep the reactors cool after the country’s electric grid was damaged in the earthquake and the tsunami knocked out backup generators.
Meanwhile, China on Wednesday ordered the mass evacuation of its citizens from quake-affected areas of Japan, according to Chinese state media.
Thousands of Chinese nationals are stranded in the region, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
