Trade group reports surprise oil supplies increase

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch)
Crude-oil inventories rose 5.13 million barrels in the week ended Aug. 26, the American Petroleum Institute said late Tuesday.
Gasoline stockpiles declined 3.1 million barrels, the trade group said.
Distillates inventories rose 276,000 barrels, according to the API.
The data comes ahead of a weekly government report due Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Eastern.
Analysts polled by Platts expect crude-oil supplies to fall 1.2 million barrels as low imports more than offset the release of oil from the strategic petroleum reserve.
Gasoline stocks are expected to drop by 1.1 million barrels, while distillates stocks are seen rising by 1.1 million barrels.
