U.S. stock trading volume hits low for the month

Stock trading volumes on Wednesday hit their lowest levels this August, more than halfway through a traditionally sleepy month that has seen unusually high trading volatility.
For NYSE-listed shares, 3.86 billion shares traded hands, and 1.91 billion shares traded hands for Nasdaq-listed shares.
For the month-to-date, NYSE-listed daily share trading volume has averaged 6.4 billion shares, compared with a year-to-date average of 4.27 billion.
For Nasdaq-listed shares, the month-to-date average is 2.82 billion shares, and the year-to-date average is 2.03 billion shares.
Volumes include shares that trade on exchanges run by NYSE Euronext and Nasdaq OMX Group Inc. as well as other exchanges where those listed shares trade.
