Microsoft reports 6% profit rise

Microsoft Corp. on Thursday reported a fiscal first-quarter profit of $5.74 billion, or 68 cents a share, compared with a profit of $5.4 billion, or 62 cents a share, for the year-earlier period.
Revenue was $17.37 billion, up from $16.2 billion.
Analysts had expected the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant to report earnings of 68 cents a share, on revenue of $17.24 billion, according to a consensus survey by FactSet Research
