U.S. stocks' low-volume session ends with Dow loss


SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch)
U.S. stocks Tuesday closed a low-volume day with a minor loss for the Dow Jones Industrial Average delayed -0.15% and outperformance by the Nasdaq Composite +0.66% , as investors appeared unwilling to take big moves after the prior session's rally and ahead of the unofficial start of third-quarter earnings season as well as a vote on Europe's bailout fund.
The Dow average ended down 16.88 points, or 0.2%, at 11,416.30, led by a 1.4% loss in AT&T Corp. shares.
The S&P 500 ended up 0.65 point, or 0.1%, at 1,195.54, led by tech stocks.
The Nasdaq Composite rose 16.98 points, or 0.7%, to 2,583.03.
New York Stock Exchange Composite volume was 3.9 billion.
The year-to-date daily average as of Tuesday was 4.36 billion.
