U.S. House passes $915 billion spending bill

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch)
The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday approved a nearly $1 trillion bill to fund the government through the rest of the fiscal year that runs to the end of September 2012.
Most Democrats voted for the bill while the Republican vote was split. Passage of the $915 billion bill, which is also expected to win Senate approval, would avert the threat of a government shutdown.
The two parties have been haggling for several months over spending plans for the rest of the fiscal year. The fate of a temporary payroll tax cut, however, was still undecided as of mid-Friday.
The payroll tax, which pays for Social Security, was reduced last January in an effort to spur the economy.
The two parties cannot agree on how to pay for another extension of the tax cut.
