U.S. stocks closed mostly higher Tuesday, supported by hopes that a Friday summit of European Union leaders would result in firmer progress toward preventing a collapse of the European Monetary Union.
Also, a Financial Times report that the summit may result in two separate rescue funds caused a brief late-session rally.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 52.30 points, or 0.4%, to 12,150.13.
The S&P 500 gained 1.4 points, or 0.1%, to 1,258.47.
The Nasdaq Composite slipped 6.2 points, or 0.2%, to 2,649.56.
