German April ZEW index rises unexpectedly to 23.4

FRANKFURT (MarketWatch)
The closely-watched ZEW index of German investor sentiment released Tuesday unexpectedly rose in April for its fifth consecutive monthly gain
The indicator, which measures expectations among German investment professionals for the next six months, rose to 23.4 from 22.3 in March
Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast a decline to 20.0.
Wolfgang Franz, president of the Mannheim-based Center for European Economic Research, or ZEW, said the relatively "sideward" movement of the index shows that economic optimism faces "considerable risks such as the economic slowdown of important trading partners, the rise of prices for crude materials and the sovereign debt crisis in the euro zone."
