U.S. stocks mostly climbed Tuesday as investors cheered upbeat quarterly results from a range of companies, including manufacturer 3M Co.
But Apple Inc. and Netflix Inc. helped dent technology shares ahead of Apple's report after the close
Wall Street has in recent sessions broken its 'risk on, risk off' pattern of indiscrimate buying or selling, a positive sign, says Art Hogan, a strategist at Lazard Capital Markets
"Right now we're getting more discerning, buying winners and selling losers, versus jumping all in or all out of the market," Hogan said
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 74.54 points, or 0.6%, to 13,001.71
The S&P 500 rose 5.04 points, or 0.4%, to 1,371.98
The Nasdaq Composite  declined 8.85 points, or 0.3%, to 2,961.60
