Cisco Systems recently warned of cautious IT spending which sent its shares and those of other major tech companies falling
But the corporate powerhouse on Wednesday offered a rosy long-term outlook
Cisco aid a company study projects that the Internet “will be four times as large in four years.”
In techno-speak, Cisco’s study said it expects annual global internet traffic to be at 1.3 zettabytes by 2016
A zettabyte, according to Cisco, is equal to a sextillion bytes, or a trillion gigabytes
Translation: There’ll be a whole lot more traffic on Web four years from now
And the reason is the expected rapid growth of devices, from tablets to smartphones to what the company called “machine-to-machine connections.”
“Cloud computing and mobile Internet, in our view, are two of the most important trends driving spending in our IT hardware and data networking coverage universe,” ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall said
That’s good news not only for the companies that makes those devices, but also those that make the gear and systems used to build the data centers that run those networks and process all that Internet traffic
