MADRID -(MarketWatch)- Telefonica SA /quotes/zigman/161324/quotes/nls/tef TEF +3.01% said Friday its first-quarter net profit fell on weakness in European markets like Spain and Italy, despite a strong contribution from its Latin American operations.

Madrid-based Telefonica--Europe's second-largest telecommunications company by market value after U.K.-based Vodafone Group PLC (VOD) -- said its first quarter net profit dropped to EUR748 million in the first quarter of the year, a 54% drop from the same period last year.

A poll of nine analysts conducted by Dow Jones Newswires had anticipated a EUR1.31 billion net profit.

Operating income before depreciation and amortization, or OIBDA, fell 8.8% to EUR5.08 billion, with Latin America representing for the first time more than 50% of that figure. OIBDA was lower than analysts' expectations who on average projected OIBDA at EUR5.27 billion.

Telefonica's revenue in the first quarter rose 0.5% to EUR15.5 billion. The earnings report published Friday includes a EUR337 million write-down for Telecom Italia operation
