Stock volume surges; Nasdaq at highest of year

U.S. stock volume jumped Tuesday as markets tumbled on worries about Spanish banks and Greek politics, but then recovered more than half their losses by the close
The volume of New York Stock Exchange-listed shares rose to 4.21 billion, the largest volume day since April 10, 2012, according to the Wall Street Journal's data group
The average daily volume this year has been 3.78 billion
For shares listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, 2.17 billion shares traded, the largest trading volume this year, and above the year-to-date average of 1.75 billion
The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended Tuesday with a loss of 76 points
