Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Spanish Vice
President Soraya Saenz de Santamaría discussed the Spanish government's efforts
to strengthen its financial sector amid speculation that the International
Monetary Fund was considering a possible rescue loan for the country

and Saenz met for less than an hour in Washington after Saenz had met with IMF
managing director Christine Lagarde
Stocks pared losses Thursday after the Wall
Street Journal published a report that the IMF had started internal talks on a
possible rescue loan for Spain
The IMF chief later denied there was no plan or
request for a Spanish bailout
Geithner and Saenz also discussed the Spanish
government's plans to support recovery and job creation and the "significant
progress Spain has made on fiscal and structural reforms," said Kara Alaimo, a
