U.S. stocks close lower, with late-session selloff dragging down Dow; Nasdaq's off 1.7%

U.S. stocks on Monday closed steeply lower, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average  halting its winning run at four sessions, with cheer over Europe's rescue plan for Spanish banks fading rapidly
"It's a story that we've seen before
Investors are a bit more cautious this time around," said Andrew Fitzpatrick, director of investments at Hinsdale Associates, of the latest moves in Europe to stem the region's debt trouble
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 142.97 points, or 1.1%, to 12,411.23
The S&P 500 Index shed 16.73 points, or 1.3%, to 1,308.93
The Nasdaq Composite declined 48.69 points, or 1.7%, to 2,809.73
