National chain-store sales fell 0.3% in the first week of January from
December, according to Redbook Research's latest indicator, released Tuesday
The index's drop compared with a targeted flat reading
The Johnson Redbook Index also showed seasonally adjusted sales for the
period were up 2.1% from last year, compared with a 2.3% targeted gain
Redbook said sales were below plan for most retailers as consumers were
motivated by markdowns to move seasonal inventories
Sales for the week rose 2.1% year-over-year
