Wells Fargo faces U.S. mortgage-bond probe: report

MADRID (MarketWatch)
U.S. attorneys have had Wells Fargo & Co. under the microscope for more than a year over the institution's mortgage-bond sales, according to a Bloomberg News report
Citing persons with knowledge of the matter, the report said authorities are looking into whether the firm broke the law with regards to the Financial Institution Reform and Recovery Act
Under that law, which carries a 10-year statute of limitations, the government can sue for fraud that affects a federally insured financial institution
A task force set up by President Barack Obama last year, examining mortgage-bond underwriting that triggered bank bailouts in the 1980s, is focusing on eight banks, those people said
Neither Wells Fargo nor a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag would comment to Bloomberg with regards to the report
