In its preliminary estimate for December, the National Statistics Institute said Spain's European Union-harmonized consumer-price index was unchanged from the 0.3% annual rise registered in November
Consumer prices fell 0.1% on the year in October amid lower housing and transportation prices, raising concern among economists that Spain might be entering a phase of deflation.

Hungary's budget deficit below EU limit: minister
MADRID--Spanish jobless claims fell sharply in December as shops and other service sector businesses stepped up hiring of temporary workers for the holiday season, the Labor Ministry said.
According to data published Friday, the number of people filing for jobless benefits dropped by 107,570 last month. The ministry said that was the biggest December drop on record, and the second biggest of any month on record, an indication that the euro zone's fourth-largest economy has overcome the worst of its unemployment crisis.
With 4.7 million workers still filing jobless claims each month, Spain continues to have the second-highest unemployment rate in Europe. Over the last 12 months, the number has fallen by 147,385.
At the end of the third quarter, the Spanish unemployment rate stood at 26% of the workforce, down from 26.3% in the second quarter.
The bulk of the new jobs were in the services sector, which usually hires more during periods of peak demand such as Christmas. According to the ministry, monthly jobless claims fell by 2.85%, or 87,253 people, in the services sector.
More than 90% of the new contracts signed last month were temporary, the ministry said.
The government has said the economy, which exited a nine-quarter recession in the third quarter, will start creating jobs this year, after five years of sustained job losses.
