Yellen signals she will continue Bernanke policy

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch)
New Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen said Tuesday that markets should expect no sharp changes in central bank strategy
"I served on the Federal Open Market Committee as we formulated our current policy strategy and I strongly support that strategy," Yellen said in remarks prepared for the House Financial Services Committee
Yellen stuck with the language of the Fed's last policy statement that the central bank would taper the pace of its asset purchases at future meetings if the economy continued to improve as expected
She added the Fed plans to hold short-term interest rates at zero "well past" the time the jobless rate falls below 6.5%
Yellen said volatility in global markets was not causing the Fed to rethink its policy stance. "Our sense is that at this stage these developments do not pose a substantial risk to the U.S. economic outlook," Yellen said

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser on Tuesday continued to make the case for ending the current asset purchase program sooner to reflect the improvement in the economic outlook and to lessen some of the communications problems the Federal Open Market Committee will face with its forward guidance. Plosser said the unseasonably cold, winter weather impacted the January jobs data and added it may take "another couple of months" to have a better read on the underlying pace of the economy. Plosser, a voting FOMC member, says the economy will grow around 3% this year.
