Manufacturing activity in the New York region showed modest improvement in March, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said Monday
The regional bank's "Empire State" general business conditions index rose to 5.6 in March from 4.5 in February
The increase was in line with the expectations of a survey of economists conducted by MarketWatch Readings above zero signal expansion
Details of the report also showed some improvement
The new orders index climbed out of negative territory and shipments rose slightly
Inventories rose to 7.1 from negative 5 in the prior month
The index for number of employees fell in March but remained in positive territory while the average workweek rose slightly
