President Barack Obama praised Europe for the steps it has taken in the wake of the financial crisis but said growth remains slow and the unemployment rate remains high
Each country in Europe has its own set of issues to address, the president said at a joint press conference in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi
The president said the old impasse about growth versus austerity is "sterile debate."
"Those countries that have substantial surpluses have more room to help boost European-wide demand, and that in turn will help countries that are still in deficit, that will lift Europe as a whole, and that means that everybody's growing," he said
The IMF's announcememt that it has reached a preliminary $18 billion loan agreement with Ukraine is "a major step forward," Obama said
"This significant package of support is going to help Ukraine stabilize its economy and meet the needs of the Ukrainian people over the long term," putting the country on a successful growth path similar to its neighbor Poland, he added
The president also disclosed that he invited Pope Francis to visit the United States during their private meeting this morning
