November retail trade increased a seasonally adjusted 1.9 percent over September 2010.
The figure compared to a 1.9 percent on-month decline for September, and outpaced economists' estimates of a 1.1 percent monthly gain.Retail sales for the year to November were up 1.3 percent, compared to a decline of 0.2 percent on year for September.
Economists were projecting a 0.4 percent November gain.
Sales by large retailers increased 0.2 percent on month, compared to a 0.4 percent rise in September. Economists were forecasting a 0.3 percent decline in sales by large retailers.
