Japanese military helicopters were seen dropping water Thursday morning to cool the damaged No. 3 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility.
The helicopters, belonging to the Self-Defense Forces, were conducting the operations as it was feared the reactor may have released radioactive steam due to damage to its containment vessel, according to a Kyodo news report.
Each helicopter can drop about 7.5 tons of water, according to a report on NHK World news channel.
The operations are being conducted from a height and with the helicopters in motion to reduce radiation risk to the crew, according to NHK, which added that 11 water-bearing trucks were also on the way to the site to pump water into the reactor
