WASHINGTON (MarketWatch)
Caterpillar Inc. said Monday its third-quarter profit climbed to $1.14 billion, or $1.71 a share, from $792 million, or $1.22 a share, in the year-ago period.
Revenue climbed to $15.72 billion from $10.45 billion.
Excluding the recent acquisition of Bucyrus, the Peoria, Ill., manufacturer said it earned $1.93 a share in the most recent period.
Analysts surveyed by FactSet Research were looking for earnings of $1.63 a share, on average.
For the full year, Caterpillar anticipated earnings to be at the top of the range of its $6.25 to $6.75 a share outlook, or $7.25 a share on an adjusted basis.
The Wall Street consensus is for 2011 earnings of $6.76 a share.
