U.S. stocks close higher, buoyed by European summit and earnings; Dow's up 162 points


SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch)
U.S. stocks closed with broad gains Wednesday, buoyed by details emerging from a closely-followed European Union summit that suggested leaders were working toward a greatly leveraged bailout fund and that China may invest in the rescue fund.
Earnings from some bellwethers also helped.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 162.42 points, or 1.4%, to 11,869.04.
Boeing Co. shares led gainers, up 4.5%, after the aircraft maker reported quarterly results.
The S&P 500 /rose 12.95 points, or 1.1%, to 1,242, led by energy and financial stocks.
The Nasdaq Composite gained 12.25 points, or 0.5%, to 2,650.67.
