Japan Retail Sales Surge 4.9% In April


(RTTNews) - Retail sales in Japan were up 4.9 percent on year in April to 11.401 trillion yen, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said on Friday. That was sharply higher than forecasts for a 3.3 percent annual increase following the 4.7 percent gain in March.
On a monthly basis, retail sales added 0.5 percent, defying expectations for a 1.0 percent decline after adding 0.8 percent in March.
The sales from large scale retailers declined 3.6 percent on year to 1.547 trillion yen after shedding an annual 5.0 percent a month earlier.
The data also showed that commercial sales were up 3.8 percent on year to 42.054 trillion yen, while wholesale sales added an annual 3.4 percent to 30.652 trillion yen.
